Update: SH11 Paihia drainage and road rebuild

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 8 Oct 2026 3:05pm | Northland

Update 8 October:

Following feedback from the Paihia community, NZTA has adjusted its work methodology to allow one escorted pass through the road rebuild site each night for local residents returning home after work, including those arriving on the last passenger ferry from Russell.

As close to 10.30pm as possible, and when safe to do so, waiting vehicles at the closure points will be escorted through the active worksite by a pilot vehicle. A single escorted pass will be provided in each direction. Please allow up to 15 minutes.

To avoid missing the escorted pass, people should ensure they arrive before 10.30pm. To keep the project on schedule, crews are unable to stop work multiple times each night. Once waiting vehicles have been escorted through the site, construction activities will resume and the road closure will remain in place.

Please note that adverse weather, equipment breakdowns, or other unforeseen construction issues may affect the planned timing of the escorted pass.

30 September:

The stop/go drainage works on SH11 in Paihia have been delayed and are now planned to start on Monday 5 October. These works are expected to continue into the following week. The planned overnight road closures from Sunday 11 October remain unchanged.

This updates the information below.

22 September – Allow extra time for SH11 Paihia drainage and road rebuild works

There are upcoming drainage and road rebuild works on State Highway 11 (SH11) in Paihia, between Tohitapu Road and Binnie Street, from Monday 28 September.

The team will be improving drainage and rebuilding the road to improve the condition and resilience of this section of highway. This section of road has reached the end of its serviceable life and needs to be rebuilt before further deterioration occurs.

The work will be completed in two stages:

  • Monday 28 September to Friday 9 October: during this period drainage improvements will be carried out under daytime stop/go traffic management between 7am and 6pm.
  • Sunday 11 October to Friday 23 October: road rebuilding works under nighttime road closures between 8pm and 6am, excluding Friday and Saturday nights. Work is scheduled to finish by 12pm on Friday 23 October.

During the daytime works, road users should allow up to 10 minutes extra travel time and follow all traffic management in place. A temporary speed limit of 30km/h will apply through the work site.

During the night works, SH11 will be closed between Tohitapu Road and Binnie Street, with traffic detoured via SH1 Kawakawa, SH10 Pakaraka and SH11 Haruru. The reverse route will apply for southbound traffic.

The detour is expected to add up to 50 minutes to journeys.

Residents within the work area will continue to have access, and emergency services will be accommodated at all times.

The road rebuilding work is being carried out at night to reduce disruption to daytime traffic, freight movements, local businesses and people travelling through Paihia.

The work is weather dependent and may be postponed if conditions are unsuitable.

NZTA thanks everyone for their understanding and patience while we carry out this essential maintenance.
