UPDATE: SH87 reopened after snow closure

State Highway 87 from Outram to Middlemarch, in Otago, has reopened followed an overnight closure because of snow.
People are asked to travel with extra care on this route.
1:50pm – SH1 north of Dunedin reopened
State Highway 1 between Dunedin and Waitati (north of Dunedin) has reopened following a closure from this morning due to snow.

1.30pm – SH87 closure to remain overnight
State Highway 87 from Outram to Middlemarch, in Otago, is due to remain closed overnight because of snow.
An update is expected by 9am tomorrow on the status of this road.
State Highway 1 between Dunedin and Waitati (north of Dunedin) remains closed for now, also because of snow, but work continues towards a reopening later today.
State Highway 94 Te Anau to Milford Sound is now open and expected to remain open overnight, but with snow forecast to continue throughout the day, disruptions and temporary closures are possible while snow clearing machinery is working.
People are reminded to take care on the roads around the lower South Island today as snow, rain and winds continue to make driving conditions tricky in places.
10am – SH87 also closed by snow
State Highway 87 from Outram to Middlemarch in Otago has been closed to snow, soon after the closure of State Highway 1 north of Dunedin.
People are urged to avoid these closed roads and to generally take extra care on other roads where snow is falling around Otago.
State Highway 85 between Kyeburn and Palmerston is open but subject to an Area Warning because of snow.
On State Highway 88 at Sawyers Bay, caution is being urged because of surface flooding, and a Strong Wind Warning is also in place in Otago, with extra care required for high-sided vehicles like campervans, towing vehicles and motorcycles when travelling through the area.
9:35am – SH1 snow closure north of Dunedin
Snow has closed State Highway 1 between Dunedin and Waitati (north of Dunedin)
People are being asked to delay their journeys or use an alternative route.
Area warnings are in place because of snow and ice on State Highway 87 from Kyeburn to Outram, and on State Highway 85 between Kyeburn and Palmerston.
