UPDATE: Shared path works continue on Jarden Mile

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 16 Jul 2026 1:47pm | Wellington

UPDATE 16 July:

Drivers can expect further night-time lane and ramp closures next week on Hutt Road and at Jarden Mile while intersection and shared path improvements near completion.

Since the Ngauranga to Petone section of Te Ara Tupua opened, more people are using the shared path. The project involves widening and upgrading the section connected to Te Ara Tupua to improve safety for all path users.

Crews are also upgrading the traffic signals at the intersection to make it safer and easier for pedestrians, including those accessing nearby bus stops.

These works are complex because many underground services run through this section of road and path. Recent weather has also meant some work had to be rescheduled. Due to this complexity and rescheduling, it is now likely the improvements will be completed early next month.

The current works are taking place at night when there are fewer vehicles on the road. Drivers should plan ahead, allow extra time for their journeys, and follow all traffic management and temporary speed limits. These measures are in place to keep the public and work crews safe.

Daytime closures will soon be needed so crews can resurface the shared path section of Jarden Mile. Updates will be provided once details and timing are confirmed.

Works schedule

Sunday 19 July to Tuesday 21 July, 9pm – 4:30am

  • Northbound lefthand lane closure on Hutt Road at Jarden Mile intersection.
  • Bus stop 3262 (Ngauranga-Hutt Road - opposite motorway) will be temporarily relocated to just south of the work area.
  • Tuesday works on this section will only take place if required.

Tuesday 21 July to Thursday 23 July, 9pm - 4:30am

  • SH2 southbound off-ramp closed.
  • Tuesday off-ramp closure is dependent on completions of work on Hutt Road through Sunday and Monday.
  • Drivers wanting to exit SH2 and access SH1 at Ngauranga will need to continue south on SH1 and exit at Aotea Quay.
  • During these works, drivers wanting to access the SH2 onramp from Jarden Mile or Hutt Road will need to detour via Centennial Highway.
  • Traffic management will be set up from 8 pm. Delays can be expected while this is underway.

8 July

Drivers can expect further night-time lane and ramp closures next week on Hutt Road and at the Jarden Mile while intersection and shared path improvements continue.

Since Te Ara Tupua opened, more people have been cycling and walking through this section of shared path. The project involves widening and upgrading the section connected to Te Ara Tupua to improve its safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

Crews are also upgrading the traffic signals at the intersection to make it safer and easier for pedestrians, including those accessing nearby bus stops.

These works are complex because many underground services run through this section of road and path. Recent weather has also meant some work had to be rescheduled.

The current works are taking place at night, when there are fewer vehicles on the road. Drivers should plan ahead, allow extra time for their journeys, and follow all traffic management and temporary speed limits. These measures are in place to keep the public and work crews safe.

The public will be updated each week as details for future closures are confirmed. All works are expected to be completed by late July, weather dependent.

Work schedule

  • Sunday 12 and Monday 13 July, 9 pm – 4:30 am
    • Lane closures on Hutt Road, northbound and southbound, near the median traffic island.
  • Tuesday 14 to Thursday 16 July, 9pm – 4:30am
    • SH2 southbound off-ramp closed.
    • Drivers wanting to exit SH2 and access SH1 at Ngauranga will need to continue south on SH1 and exit at Aotea Quay.
    • Traffic management setup from 8 pm. Delays can be expected while this is underway.

Map of Ngauranga Interchange shows an off-ramp closure near Petone in red. A green line indicates a detour via Aotea Quay towards Wellington.

2 July

Roadworks continue next week on Hutt Road and the Jarden Mile as part of ongoing improvements to the intersection and the shared path.

Contractors will be working on traffic lights and traffic islands at the Hutt Road / Ngauranga interchange intersection, as well as widening the shared path, on Sunday to Wednesday nights (5 – 8 July) between 9pm and 4:30am.

Because lane closures will be needed for both the northbound and southbound lanes on Hutt Road (Sunday and Monday), a closure of the State Highway 2 southbound offramp (Wednesday), and a closure of the link from Hutt Road to the northbound State Highway 2 onramp, drivers can expect delays and detours when travelling through the area (see maps below).

While the work is being done at night when there are fewer vehicles on the road, drivers should plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys. They should also follow all traffic management and temporary speed limits in place. They are there to keep the public and work crews safe.

Work on the shared path improvements is expected to be finished this month. However, the work is weather-dependent and schedules may be affected.

Works schedule and detours

Sunday 5 July and Monday 6 July, 9pm – 4:30am (back up night of Tuesday 7 July if bad weather occurs)

  • Lane closures for Hutt Road, north and southbound by traffic island
  • No direct access to SH2 northbound onramp. Detour available via Centennial Highway

Wednesday 8 July, 9pm – 4:30am

  • No direct access to SH2 northbound onramp. Detour available via Centennial Highway
  • SH2 southbound offramp CLOSED
  • Drivers wanting to exit SH2 and access SH1 at Ngauranga will need to continue south on SH1 and exit at Aotea Quay
  • Traffic management will be set up from 8pm – delays can be expected while this is underway

25 June

Improvements to the shared path on Jarden Mile and Hutt Road are continuing, and drivers need to be aware of planned roadworks next week that will affect the route.

Next week, contractors will be working at night to reinstate traffic signals and traffic islands at the intersection of Hutt Road and the State Highway 2 offramp.

Traffic management will be in place to ensure this work can be completed safely.

The State Highway 2 southbound offramp will again have night closures. These will take place from Sunday to Wednesday nights (28 June to 1 July), between 9 pm and 4:30 am.

Drivers needing to access State Highway 1 Ngauranga Gorge from State Highway 2 will need to detour by continuing south and using the Aotea Quay offramp.

There will also be a lane closure on Hutt Road for northbound traffic on Thursday night (2 July), from 9 pm to 4:30 am.

Regular users of the route are encouraged to keep up to date on planned works and plan their journeys accordingly. Drivers are also asked to follow all traffic management in place and instructions from road crews.

Works schedule and detour route

  • Sunday, 26 June to Wednesday, 1 July. 9 pm – 4:30 am.
    • SH2 southbound offramp CLOSED.
    • Drivers wanting to exit SH2 and access SH1 at Ngauranga will need to continue south on SH1 and exit at Aotea Quay.
    • Traffic management will be set up from 8 pm – delays can be expected while this is underway.
  • Thursday, 2 July, 9 pm – 4:30 am.
    • Northbound lane closure on Hutt Road and 30 km/h temporary speed limit.

10 June

There will be further night closures of the State Highway 2 southbound offramp at the Ngauranga interchange next week as part of ongoing shared path improvement works.

The closures will be in place from Sunday to Thursday nights (14 – 18 June) between 9 pm and 4:30 am.

Work crews will be widening the shared path where it connects to the Ngauranga to Petone section of te Ara Tupua. They will also install new traffic lights and, on Monday night, pour concrete for new kerbs and channels.

Because of the nature of the work involved and the machinery being used, for safety reasons the offramp has to be closed. There is no room for vehicles to pass through the work area.

Drivers needing to access State Highway 1 Ngauranga Gorge from State Highway 2 will have to detour by continuing south and using the Aotea Quay offramp (see map below).

Work on this project will continue throughout June and is expected to finish in July. When complete, shared path users will have better access to the Ngauranga to Petone section of Te Ara Tupua. There will also be improved and safer connections for cyclists and pedestrians at the Hutt Road / Jarden Mile intersection.

Work schedule and detour map

  • Sunday, 14 June to Thursday, 18 June. 9 pm – 4:30 am
    • SH2 southbound offramp CLOSED.
    • Drivers wanting to exit SH2 and access SH1 at Ngauranga will need to continue south on SH1 and exit at Aotea Quay
    • Traffic management will be set up from 8 pm – delays can be expected while this is underway.

4 June

Changes to the Jarden Mile and Hutt Road intersection continue next week as part of ongoing shared path improvements.

The work improves connections for pedestrians and cyclists between the Hutt Road shared path, State Highway 1 at Ngauranga Gorge, and the Ngauranga to Petone section of Te Ara Tupua. Construction is expected to continue until July.

Key works next week include traffic light upgrades, new line markings, and widening part of the shared path.

The biggest impact on the public and drivers will be traffic light works and line marking for road layout changes. This will be done as nightworks from Sunday 7 June until Thursday 11 June between 9pm and 4:30am.

This will require the closure of the State Highway 2 southbound offramp. Drivers needing to access State Highway 1 Ngauranga Gorge will have to detour by continuing south and using the Aotea Quay offramp (see map below).

Drivers and shared path users are asked to take care while travelling through the area and follow all traffic management in place.

Work schedule and detour map

  • Sunday 7 June until Thursday 11 June. 9pm – 4:30am (Tuesday 9 June is a contingency in case bad weather occurs)

28 May

Shared path works for Hutt Road and the Jarden Mile continue next week near the Ngauranga interchange.

With the installation of sign sockets, traffic light foundations, and cable ducting planned, traffic flows will be affected during the planned nightworks.

The biggest impact on traffic will be the closure of the State Highway 2 southbound offramp on Wednesday and Thursday nights (3 and 4 June) between 9 pm and 4:30 am.

Drivers needing to access State Highway 1 Ngauranga Gorge will have to detour by continuing south and using the Aotea Quay offramp (see map below).

Hours of work will start later on Monday night to accommodate expected increases in King’s Birthday Weekend holiday traffic.

Works schedule and detour map

  • Monday, 1 June 10 pm to 4:30 am and Tuesday, 2 June, 9 pm – 4:30 am.
    • Lane closure at Hutt Road/SH1 intersection.
  • Wednesday, 3 June and Thursday, 4 June.

21 May

Drivers can expect lane closures and an onramp closure next week as shared path improvement works continue at Hutt Road and the Jarden Mile.

Paving works are planned, as is the installation of infrastructure/ducting for traffic lights at the intersection.

There will be lane closures in place on the State Highway 2 southbound offramp on Sunday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. There will also be lane closures on Hutt Road on Monday and Tuesday nights.

The work that is set to affect drivers the most will be the closure of access to the northbound onramp onto State Highway 2 from Hutt Road on Sunday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights (24, 27, and 28 May - 9pm to 4am).

This means drivers will not be able to directly access the onramp from the Hutt Road intersection. Instead, traffic will have to head north on the Centennial Highway, turn right, then resume southbound on the Centennial Highway to access the onramp.

13 May

With traffic island and streetlight works planned next week for shared path improvements on the Jarden Mile, drivers are asked to be ready for night works.

The shared path is being improved and linked in to the new Ngauranga to Petone – Te Ara Tupua infrastructure.

Next week, work crews will install ducting at the median traffic island on Hutt Road. They will also be removing a streetlight pole at the intersection.

The biggest disruption for drivers will be on Wednesday and Thursday nights (20 and 21 May), when contractors will be doing underground service works for streetlights. This will require the closure of the State Highway 2 southbound off-ramp on both nights between 9pm and 4:30am.

Southbound traffic wanting to access State Highway 1 and Hutt Road will have to detour by continuing south and using the Aotea Quay offramp (see map below).

Ngauranga to Petone – Te Ara Tupua shared path advice

The Ngauranga to Petone section of Te Ara Tupua shared path opens to the public on Saturday. With a relatively good weather forecast for the weekend, significant numbers of people are expected to visit and use the route.

As improvements are continuing for the shared path on Hutt Road/Jarden Mile, some congestion can be expected at a pinch point at the Ngauranga/Hutt Road end of the path. Cyclists and pedestrians are asked to share the path with care while this work continues.

Works schedule

  • Wednesday, 20 May and Thursday, 21 May, 9 pm – 4:30 am.

7 May

Work continues on shared path improvements Jarden Mile.

Next week contractors will be doing nightworks on the traffic lights and traffic islands at the Ngauranga Interchange and Hutt Road. They will also be installing new ducting for utilities.

While this is underway, the State Highway 2 southbound offramp to State Highway 1 Ngauranga and Hutt Road will be closed to traffic.

These closures will be in place Sunday to Thursday nights (10 - 14 May) between 8 pm and 5:30 am.

Southbound traffic wanting to access State Highway 1 and Hutt Road will have to detour by continuing south and using the Aotea Quay offramp (see map below).

Further work is planned for the week beginning 21 May on the centre traffic island on Hutt Road. This work will be done using lane closures.

Drivers can expect travel delays while this work is being completed and should allow extra time for their journeys.

Works schedule

  • Sunday, 10 May to Thursday, 14 May, 8 pm – 5:30 am.

15 April

Drivers can expect further night closures for the State Highway 2 southbound offramp at the Ngauranga interchange next week.

They are required for ongoing improvements being made to the shared path.

The offramp will be closed Sunday to Thursday nights (19 – 23 April), between 9 pm and 4:30 am.

Work crews will be cutting into the road to install traffic light electrical ducting for planned traffic light upgrades at the intersection. They will also be moving streetlights and working on traffic islands.

For safety reasons, and because the work will affect traffic lanes, the offramp will not be able to be used by traffic. Drivers wanting to access SH1 Ngauranga Gorge will have to detour by continuing south,  exit at Aotea Quay, turn at the Aotea Quay roundabout, and rejoin State Highway 1 on the Aotea Quay northbound onramp.

More work is planned on this project until mid-July. This includes lane adjustments at the intersection where the State Highway 2 offramp meets the Hutt Road / SH1 Ngauranga intersection. This will not affect traffic flow, but drivers can expect to see traffic management while this work is being completed.

These works are weather dependent and schedules may change. Drivers are encouraged to check road conditions before they travel.

Works schedule

  • Sunday, 19 April until Thursday, 23 April - 9 pm to 4:30 am.
    • State Highway 2 southbound offramp CLOSED.
    • Drivers wanting to exit SH2 and access SH1 at Ngauranga will need to continue south on SH1 and exit at Aotea Quay.
    • Traffic management will be set up from 8 pm – delays can be expected while this is underway.

7 April

Due to scheduling changes, night closures for the State Highway 2 southbound offramp will not be happening this week.

They will now proceed next week, on Sunday to Thursday nights (12-16 April) between 9 pm and 4:30 am.

The same detour route will apply and drivers will need to allow extra time for their journeys.

Works schedule

  • Sunday, 12 April until Thursday, 16 April - 9 pm to 4:30 am.

1 April

A heads up for motorists that the State Highway 2 southbound offramp is to have night closures again next week for this project.

During site works this week, a previously unmapped drain was found. To ensure it is properly managed and relocated, extra time is needed to finish this – which means further offramp closures are needed.

It means the SH2 southbound offramp – which connects to Hutt Road and SH1 Ngauranga Gorge – will be closed to all traffic on Monday to Thursday nights next week (4 - 7 April), between 9 pm and 4:30 am. During the day, there will be cones and fencing at the work site, so we advise people to drive carefully.

Drivers wanting to exit SH2 and access SH1 at Ngauranga will need to continue south on SH1 and exit at Aotea Quay (see detour map below). This is a longer distance and will require extra travel time. Drivers should plan accordingly.

There will be no work on Sunday night because of it being Easter weekend. The offramp will be open to traffic over the holiday weekend.

Works schedule

  • Monday, 4 April until Thursday, 7 April - 9 pm to 4:30 am.

13 March

Work is set to begin later this month on improvements to the shared path on Jarden Mile.

The project is a joint piece of work involving NZTA/Waka Kotahi and the Wellington City Council (WCC). It will see a range of improvements made to the path - e.g. a better surface and widened corner -at its northern end where it will link to the soon-to-be-opened Ngauranga to Petone section of Te Ara Tupua.

It is not part of Te Ara Tupua project works – but will see improvements made to existing shared path infrastructure at the Ngauranga interchange. This includes drainage work, as well as upgrades to the path.

Because it will require the closure of the State Highway 2 southbound offramp, traffic will be affected.

Two weeks of night closures are planned - Sunday , 22 March to Thursday, 26 March, 9 pm to 4:30 am, and Sunday, 29 March to Thursday, 2 April, 9 pm to 4:30 am.

Drivers wanting to exit SH2 and access SH1 at Ngauranga will need to continue south on SH1 and exit at Aotea Quay (see detour map below). This is a longer distance and will require extra travel time. Drivers should plan accordingly.

The closures are timed to happen at night when traffic volumes are lower. This helps minimise disruptions and delays.

Further works are planned in the area over the next three months. Updates will be provided for work that will affect traffic.

Drivers are encouraged to follow all traffic management in place and temporary speed limits while work is ongoing. They are there to keep contractors and the public safe.

Works schedule

  • Sunday, 22 March until Thursday, 26 March - 9 pm to 4:30 am.

  • Sunday, 29 March until Thursday, 2 April - 9 pm to 4:30 am.
