UPDATE: State Highway 1 Transmission Gully resurfacing and repairs

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 13 Jan 2026 1:57pm | Wellington

Resurfacing and repair work continues on SH1 Transmission Gully this week with good progress being made.

Road users should plan for both northbound and southbound night-time closures, expect delays at peak times, and consider using State Highway 59 as an option to avoid the roadworks and delays.

Northbound closures will be in place this week (Tuesday 13 January to Thursday, 15 January), between 9pm and 6am. Southbound closures are in place Tuesday, 13 January to Thursday, 15 January, between 9pm and 4.30am. The work is weather-dependent and can be postponed if bad weather occurs, so we encourage people to stay up-to-date.

What to expect

Chip seal works are happening in the southbound lanes this week, so people should follow the advertised speed limit, as loose chip can fly and cause damage to vehicles. Pavement reconstruction works are happening near Battle Hill, with lane closures in place.

Drainage works and pavement reconstruction works are happening in the northbound lanes around Waitangirua and north of State Highway 58. This also means lane closures and temporary speed limits in place.

Traffic must detour via State Highway 59 when the road is closed. Plan ahead and expect delays at times, and consider using SH59. Check the schedule below.

Works update

The last of the drainage sites in the northbound lanes near Waitangirua is expected to be completed by Thursday this week, weather permitting.

Pavement reconstruction works in the northbound lanes (north of SH58) and also in the southbound lanes near Battle Hill will be in place for up to two more weeks.

Contractors have completed chip seal works in the southbound lanes north of SH58 and next week the work will continue in southbound lanes south of SH58 meaning more southbound night-time closures. A further update will be provided soon once the schedule is confirmed.
