UPDATE: State Highway 1 Transmission Gully resurfacing and repairs

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 16 Jan 2026 2:53pm | Wellington

An updated schedule is available for next week’s SH1 Transmission Gully resurfacing and repairs works. Works are weather permitting and may be postponed at short notice.

There will be further night-time road closures in both north and southbound directions from Monday, 19 January, after the busy traffic period due to Wellington Anniversary weekend. Road users should expect delays on Transmission Gully over the long weekend with lane closures and temporary speed limits in place. The details of the traffic management in place are outlined below.

Those travelling to Porirua, Kapiti or further north from the Ed Sheeran concert on Wednesday 21 January at Sky Stadium in Wellington will need to use SH59 or consider taking the train. Metlink trains will have increased capacity and extra services running after the concert.

Works will continue all week next week, road users are reminded to expect delays along SH1 Transmission Gully in both directions, particularly at peak times. Consider using State Highway 59 as an option to avoid the roadworks and delays.

Drive carefully

Chip seal works are happening in both the southbound and northbound lanes next week, so people should follow the advertised speed limit, as loose chip can fly and cause damage to vehicles.

Works update

The last of the drainage sites in the northbound lanes near Waitangirua is now complete.

Pavement reconstruction works in the northbound lanes (north of SH58) and also in the southbound lanes near Battle Hill continue into next week.

Next week work will continue to complete most of the chip seal works in the southbound lanes. Chip seal works will also begin in the northbound lanes.
