Update 9:45pm:

State Highway 2 has reopened between Featherston and Greytown following a serious crash on the route late this afternoon.

The highway was closed for around three and a half hours while emergency services and  road crews attended the incident.

Update 6:25 pm:

State Highway 2 is expected to remain closed for several hours tonight, following a serious crash  near Tauwharenīkau late this afternoon.

The Police Serious Crash Unit is attending, and the highway is expected to remain closed while its investigation is underway.

People travelling between Featherston and Greytown can expect ongoing delays until the investigation is complete, and the crash site is cleared. 

Alternative routes are available on local roads, but  they will require extra travel time.

Travel delays can be expected on State Highway 2 between Featherston and Greytown following a serious crash at Tauwharenīkau late this afternoon.

The highway is currently CLOSED near the intersection of No 1 Line.
