UPDATE: State Highway 2 crash closures – Wairarapa (SH2 Masterton now OPEN)

UPDATE 9 pm:

State Highway 2 has reopened in Masterton following a car vs power pole crash which occurred around 4 pm this afternoon.

The highway was closed, with local road detours in place, for approximately four hours and twenty minutes while emergency services and contractors cleared the crash site.


UPDATE 5:55 pm:

State Highway 2 has reopened in Featherston following a crash late this afternoon. The highway, which was closed for  approximately one hour, is now fully open to traffic.

However, the highway remains closed in Masterton at the site of a car vs power pole incident. Local road detours remain available and short delays can be expected when travelling on SH2/ High Street through Solway.


5:30 pm:

People travelling on State Highway 2 in Wairarapa need to be ready for detours and delays as emergency services and contractors attend two separate crashes in Featherston and Masterton.

SH2 Featherston

State Highway 2 is currently closed in Featherston following a crash near the SH2/SH53 intersection following a multi-vehicle crash which was  reported at around 4:45 pm.

The highway is closed between Revans and Daniell Streets - local road detours are available.

SH2 Masterton

Emergency services and contractors are also attending another crash on SH2/Highstreet in Masterton, between the intersections of Solway and Derby Streets.

This incident, first reported at around 4 pm, involves a car colliding with a power pole.

State Highway 2 is closed between Solway Street and Derby Street. Local road detours are available.

Driver advice

Travel delays can be expected until both incidents are resolved, and the crash sites are cleared. 

Drivers must follow sign-posted detours, follow the instructions of contractors/emergency services, and allow for extra travel time.
