7:10pm:
State Highway 60 Tākaka Hill has been closed to traffic tonight due to movement and subsidence of the road.
It has happened at a pre-existing land slip site known as Drummond’s corner on the Riwaka side of the Tākaka Hill.
The road surface has deformed and is not safe for traffic. However, access through the area is being maintained for emergency services.
Contractors will work to restore access at the subsidence site tomorrow morning. At this stage, there is no estimated time for the road to reopen.
Drivers must avoid using the route until further notice, and an update will be provided when the situation changes.
When the highway reopens, drivers can expect to see the road reduced to a single lane under stop/go traffic management at this site. This is also in place at a nearby underslip. Longer travel times can be expected on this route when access is restored.
NZTA/Waka Kotahi appreciates that State Highway 60 Tākaka Hill is a critical transport link. Our contractors are working hard to fix and reopen the route
