Update: Travel delays expected - Tree fall on State Highway 6 Atawhai Drive, Nelson

State Highway 6 has reopened to two lanes. 

The road shoulder at the tree fall site is closed and a 50 km/h temporary speed limit is in place. 

The highway will remain open over the weekend, but contractors will be back on site on Monday at 9 am to carry out further work at the site.

Drivers can expect intermittent stops and travel delays on Monday while this work is underway.

State Highway 6 Atawhai Drive is expected to remain under stop/go traffic management into this afternoon.

Contractors are working to reopen the highway to two lanes after a tree fall earlier this morning.

The highway’s southbound lane is closed and traffic may be required to stop in both directions for short periods. Road users can expect ongoing delays until the debris is cleared.

Drivers heading in and out of Nelson can expect delays on State Highway 6 Atawhai Drive as contractors work to clear a tree fall on the route.

The highway is under stop/go traffic management between the intersections of Bay View Road and Tui Glen Road after a large tree fell onto the highway at around 2 am this morning.

Contractors are on site and working to reopen the highway to two lanes, but this work is ongoing and may take several hours to complete.

The tree fall also affects the cycle lane on the route.

Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians are urged to take care traveling through the area and follow all instructions from work crews. Travel delays can be expected until the clean-up work is completed.
