State Highway 1 Mount Victoria Tunnel has reopened following a serious crash this afternoon.

The tunnel was closed to traffic for just over three hours while the Police Serious Crash Unit investigated the incident and the crash site was cleared.

5:30pm update

Mount Victoria Tunnel is  closed in both directions following a crash this afternoon.

The crash was first reported around 4:15 pm outside the tunnel’s entrance and initially affected the highway’s northbound lane.

The tunnel is now closed to traffic in both directions while the crash is investigated and the scene is cleared. At this stage there is no estimate for when the tunnel may reopen.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area and  people travelling between the Wellington CBD and Miramar should use an alternative route on local roads.

Delays can be expected, and drivers should allow extra time for their journeys.
