Right through the middle of the wetter and colder winter months, maintenance crews are out and about across the network on a regular basis, repairing issues or making areas safe as required.
Sandra King, Bay of Plenty System Manager at NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA), explains; “During weather events, road conditions can change quickly, and our teams are ready to respond. Repairs will happen as soon as it’s possible, and in some instances, we may need to install traffic management to ensure the safety of both our road users and crews.
Please remember road closures and temporary speed restrictions are put in place for the safety of you, other road users and road workers, and these need to be followed.
Potholes can form quickly during periods of rain, when water gets beneath the road surface. Combined with the constant pressure of vehicles, this causes the surface to weaken and eventually break down—leading to holes or depressions in the road surface.
Our contractors respond within 24 hours, but they can’t fix what they don’t know about. If you spot a pothole, please report it by calling 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49) so we can get it repaired as soon as possible.
