Warnings of light snow on the roads as winter looms
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 20 Apr 2026 1:22pm | Canterbury
Winter is coming….or at least it might feel that way for road users travelling on alpine passes in the central South Island from this afternoon, as light snow is forecast.
MetService has road snowfall warnings in place for both Porters Pass (State Highway 73), from 3pm today, and for Lewis Pass (State Highway 7), from 7pm today, but accumulations about the summits are only forecast to be only about 1 or 2cm.
Although only light snowfalls are expected and any impact is likely to be minimal, New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi will have patrol crews ready to respond if needed. Road users are encouraged to keep an eye on current weather conditions and to be prepared in case snowfalls are more significant than forecast.
Meanwhile, an orange heavy rain warning remains in place for the Kaikoura Coast and ranges, and North Canterbury ranges east of Lake Sumner, through until 11pm tonight. This level of warning indicates that streams and rivers may rise rapidly, and surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions are possible.
Heavy rain means slippery roads and drivers should think about adjusting their speed and travelling distances, avoiding sudden braking, and staying visible.
A MetService strong wind watch is also in effect for the Buller, Grey and Westland districts on the West Coast, with advice that southeast winds may approach several gale force in exposed places. This watch is currently in place until noon tomorrow.
