With bad weather forecast for the region, drivers are asked to take extra care on the roads in the top of the South Island.

The MetService has issued a Heavy Rain Warning (Orange Level) for Tasman, west of Mapua for 18 hours, starting from 4 pm this afternoon (Wednesday, 21 January).

80 to 120 mm of rain  is expected in the region – Heavy Rain Warnings (Yellow Level) are also in place for Tasman, Nelson, Buller, and Grey Districts.

This weather will affect:

  • State Highway 60 – Richmond to Golden Bay
  • State Highway 6 – Nelson to Westport
  • State Highway 65 - O’Sullivan’s to Springs Junction
  • State Highway 63 - Kawatiri Junction to Saint Arnaud

Drivers must be ready for weather-related hazards – localised flooding, slips, rockfalls, and slippery roads – and must drive to the conditions.

Drivers should increase their following distance, reduce speed, avoid sudden braking, and use their headlights if visibility is poor.

Bad weather can cause roads to be closed at short notice. Road users are encouraged to check road and weather conditions before they travel.
