Windy and wet weather on the way for lower North Island roads & changes to timing of SH1 Transmission Gully speed limit increase

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 14 Feb 2026 6:11pm | Wellington

With bad weather due to hit the lower North Island tomorrow night (Sunday, drivers are urged to take extra care on the region’s roads and highways.

The Metservice has issued Strong Wind Warnings (orange alert level) for Wairarapa and the Tararua Districts, as well as the Wellington region.

Severe gale south to southwesterlies gusting 120 km/h in exposed places are forecast from Sunday evening through to Monday.

Heavy Rain Watches  (yellow alert level) have also been issued, and strong Wind Warning is also in place for eastern Marlborough, which will affect SH1.

Impact on SH1Transmission Gully speed limit increase:

The bad weather forecast for Sunday night means it will not be safe for work crews to change speed limit signs on the route on Sunday night as had been planned.

This work will now be done tonight (Saturday, 14 February). However, the new 110 km/h speed limit will take effect from 12:01 am Monday morning.

With roadworks ongoing on the motorway after the new speed limit takes effect, drivers are asked to follow all temporary speed limits in place at roadwork sites. This is essential for keeping the public and contractors safe.

Bad weather – travel advice:

With strong winds and rain forecast until Monday, drivers can expect challenging conditions, including during peak morning traffic in and out of main urban centres

Road users must drive to the conditions and be prepared for weather hazards.

Strong winds increase the risk of tree falls, downed power lines, and blown debris. High-sided vehicles (eg trucks and vans), light vehicles, and motorcycles should also exercise caution on exposed routes like SH2 Remutaka Hill and the Wainui Saddle on SH1 Transmission Gully.

Heavy rain means drivers should be prepared for localised flooding and the chance of slips and rockfalls.

Because wet roads can be slippery, drivers should reduce their speed, increase their following distances, and avoid sudden braking.

Bad weather can see roads closed at short notice. Please check road and weather conditions before travelling.
