Wellington drivers are encouraged to not only hold onto their hats but to also have a firm grasp on their steering wheels, with strong winds set to buffet the region today.
The Metservice has issued a Strong Wind Warning for the region, effective for 10 hours from 11 am this morning. Gusts of up to 120 km/h are forecast for exposed areas.
A Strong Wind Watch has also been issued for Wairarapa.
Drivers of high-sided vehicles (eg trucks, vans, campervans), motorcycles, and light vehicles must take care, especially on exposed routes like State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill and the Wainui Saddle on State Highway 1 Transmission Gully.
Strong winds increase the risk of wind-blown debris, downed powerlines, and tree falls. Drivers should be prepared for these hazards.
The bad weather will coincide with peak afternoon and evening traffic. Road users are urged to take care, drive to the conditions, and check road and weather conditions before they travel.
