Crews repairing Rotokautuku (Waiapu) Bridge on State Highway 35, near Ruatoria, are restarting strengthening work after making essential modifications to the design.

Road users will see crews on-site from tomorrow (Wednesday 11 June) with project completion expected by August.

Work tomorrow includes two bridge lifts – these involve closing the bridge to traffic under stop-stop traffic management and raising it a few millimetres at a time.  Road users can expect delays of up to 10 minutes during the two lifts.

“Our crews have undertaken many bridge lifts as part of this project and have become very efficient since work started in October. We ask that road users please be tolerant and respectful of our crews out on site.

"Following tomorrow's lifts, it's expected that only one more lift will be needed before work is completed," says Transport Rebuild East Coast project manager Richard Bayley.

"While the bridge remains structurally sound, repairs to the bearings and cross bracing are needed to restore the damage caused by Cyclone Gabrielle.

"Thanks for your patience while we carry out this important mahi.

"Road workers are out in all weather and do their best to keep everyone moving. Be tolerant and respectful of all crew members and follow any instructions on site. They’re helping to keep you safe."
