Works on SH20 Hillsborough Road may delay travel times to airport and Manukau
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 13 Jan 2026 10:27am | Auckland
Safety improvements will get underway later this month to increase capacity of the southbound lanes on State Highway 20 (SH20) right after the Hillsborough Road overbridge.
While this will improve traffic flow in the long run, detours will make journeys longer for some night-time road users until early April (approximately 10 weeks).
From Tuesday 27 January, there will be a full southbound closure on SH20 between Hillsborough Road and Queenstown Road from Sundays to Thursdays between 9pm and 5am. This is in place to create a safe working environment while work is underway. A signposted detour via Mt Albert Road will be in place.
Plan for extra journey time if you are travelling to Manukau or the airport.
When the closure is in place there will be no access to SH20 southbound on-ramp. Traffic will need to follow the signposted detours to Queenstown Road southbound on-ramp:
Travelling from Hillsborough will follow the detour via Hillsborough Road, Mt Albert Road, Pah Road.
Travelling from Mt Albert Road will follow the detour via Hillsborough Road, Carlton Street, Frederick Street and Queenstown Road.
There will no works Waitangi weekend from Thursday 5 February. The crew will be back working Sunday 8 February.
Once work has been completed, the southbound on-ramp will merge with the new lane.
Properties nearby may experience increased noise levels. We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your support while we carry out these important improvement works.
This work is weather dependent and may change from advertised dates. Please check NZTA Journey Planner before you travel for real-time updates. View the latest programme here:
