Weather alerts:

The Metservice has issued weather alerts for both the lower North Island and top of the South. Heavy Rain Watches are in effect for the Tasman, Richmond, and Bryant Ranges overnight on Saturday. Strong Wind Watches also apply for Marlborough, Wellington, and Wairarapa. Drivers should be aware of weather-related hazards such as slips, rock falls, tree falls, wind gusts and wind-blown debris, and localised flooding. Drivers of high-sided vehicles are advised to exercise caution in exposed areas like State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill and the Wainui Saddle on State Highway 1 Transmission Gully. Road users are encouraged to check road and weather conditions before traveling.

Lower North Island:

Road reconstruction continues on State Highway 2 in Carterton and rebuild and safety barriers works are ongoing on State Highway 2 Totara Park in Upper Hutt. There will also be a closure of the Remutaka Hill this Sunday night for planned maintenance. People driving between the Hutt Valley and Masterton should allow for extra travel time due to these ongoing works.

Top of the South Island:

In Marlborough, work on a clip-on cycle bridge for the Whale Trail on the Waima (Ure) River Bridge will be underway. Resilience works are due to begin this Sunday at the Howard Narrows on State Highway 63 and also on State Highway 6 Whangamoa.

Overnight road closures continue until 26 May for safety barrier works on State Highway 60 Ruby Bay Bypass, and, looking ahead, pre-winter repairs for State Highway 6 Whakatu Drive will require three nights of closures from 25 to 27 May.

For regular travellers to the West Coast, be ready for a closure of State Highway 6 in the Lower Buller Gorge for a culvert replacement in early June.
