Important information for drivers.
School holidays:
It is the end of the school holidays this weekend. This means there may be more traffic on the roads as families return home from their holidays. More vehicles mean a higher risk of crashes and a greater chance of people driving on unfamiliar roads. Drivers should make sure they are rested – never drive tired – and ensure they and their passengers are safely buckled up.
With bad weather affecting both the North and South Islands, road users should drive to the conditions and check weather and road conditions before they travel. Roads can close at short notice.(external link)

Lower North Island
- Safety barrier repairs will be underway at night next week on State Highway 2 between Silverstream and Whakatiki Street.
- Daytime closures are planned during the week for State Highway 53/Revans Street between Daniell Street and the State Highway 2 intersection. This is for KiwiRail maintenance work on the rail corridor.
- The All Blacks and the Black Ferns will be playing in a double header at Sky Stadium on Saturday evening. Extra traffic can be expected heading in and out of the city before and after the games. People travelling to and from Wellington should factor this into their travel plans and allow extra time for their journeys. Metlink is also putting on extra public transport capacity before and after the matches.
Top of the South Island
- Drivers travelling in the top of the South Island need to be prepared for temporary traffic management at various sites across the region where highways have suffered damage from recent bad weather. Please follow all traffic management and speed limits in place and allow for extra travel time when passing through these areas.
- Slip repairs continue on State Highway 6 at Dellows Bluff, as do resilience works on the Whangamoa Hill on State Highway 6 and the Howard Narrows on State Highway 63
The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week.

Note: Road works are dependent on weather and other factors. Bad weather can see work postponed to the next suitable night in the works programme.
