SH2 between Matawai and Gisborne to open this evening

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 16 Jan 2026 5:42pm | Gisborne

Crews will reopen State Highway 2 between Matawai and Gisborne at 6pm today.

Earlier flooding around Te Karaka has cleared enough to safely reopen this stretch of road.

The flooding had caused slips and debris and crews have been working to safely clear the debris.

Drivers are advised to continue driving to the conditions and with caution on this stretch of road and throughout the region.

Be alert to the possibility of more flooding, debris, short notice closures.

Further north, additional slips and surface flooding on SH2 between Matawai and Waioweka mean it is not safe for our crews to clear debris or reopen the road today.

Previous traffic bulletin: 5pm UPDATE: SH2 Waioweka Gorge to remain closed over the weekend
