UPDATE: State Highway 2 Upper Hutt night works continue next week

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 26 Sept 2025 1:28pm | Wellington

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is advising road users that works on SH2 at Upper Hutt will continue into next week, with night-time closures planned.

Safety improvement work at the Moonshine Hill Road intersection will continue next week and be ongoing until mid-November.

Resurfacing works on SH2 between Fergusson Drive and Totara Park Road will also continue next week.

From Sunday 28 September through to Thursday 2 October, SH2 will be closed in both directions between Fergusson Drive, Silverstream and Totara Park Road, from 9pm to 4.30am, weather permitting.

A reminder that Riverstone Terraces residents will have access at all times during the closures.

Local road detours will be available through Upper Hutt and will require extra travel time.

23 September - State Highway 2 Upper Hutt night works – revised work schedule for this week

NZTA is advising road users of revised closure times and detour routes for the SH2 Upper Hutt night works this week. The changes are in response to recent heavy rain impacting the work schedule.

State Highway 2 will now be closed between Fergusson Drive and Gibbons Street (not through to Totara Park Road as originally planned) from 9pm to 4:30am until Thursday, 25 September.

Local road detours will be available through Upper Hutt and will require extra travel time.

The wet weather has caused delays with planned road resurfacing works throughout the Wellington region, so road resurfacing will likely be underway in Upper Hutt from next week.

Concrete works will be underway at the Whakatiki Street intersection, as well as other general maintenance works.

Further updates will be provided as works are confirmed.

Drivers can check the highway’s status on the NZTA/Waka Kotahi website:

Revised work schedule

  • Tuesday, 23 September to Thursday, 25 September, 9pm – 4:30 am
    • SH2 CLOSED in both directions
    • Local road detour available via Fergusson Drive to Gibbons Street
    • Access to Riverstone Terraces for residents will be available via SH2 northbound lanes

11 September update

Crews have postponed planned road resurfacing work next week on State Highway 2 between Totara Park Road and Whakatiki Street, due to persistent rainfall in recent days.

Planned work to install new traffic lights and intersection improvements at the intersection with Moonshine Road WILL still go ahead next week as scheduled.

As a result, next week’s detour for road users will be shorter than previously communicated.

Northbound road users will be detoured onto Fergusson Drive and left onto Whakatiki Street before rejoining SH2. The reverse will apply for southbound road users.

To ensure road resurfacing is done correctly, crews require dry weather. However recent persistent rainfall has delayed resurfacing works across the Wellington region. These resurfacing works in Upper Hutt will still be done in conjunction with the intersection upgrade works to minimise disruption.

Once the new dates for resurfacing are finalised, NZTA will provide a further update.
