Urban resurfacing night works planned for State Highway 1 / Vivian Street

Wellington drivers are urged to be ready for night works on a key section of State Highway 1 in Wellington city.
Road resurfacing is planned for late this month, and again in April, for SH1/Vivian Street – a route that carries over 20,000 vehicles daily.
Night works are planned, 9 pm to 4 am on Monday 30 March (near Cuba Street), and then again on Thursday, 9 April (near Cambridge Terrace).
The work will see the highway closed and no street parking available within the closure area. Local road detours will be available (see map below) but will require extra travel time.
Road crews will be resurfacing areas of the road where the pavement has reached the end of its life. The new surface will help reduce the risk of potholes and provide a safer and smoother road surface for traffic.
The work has been timed to be done at night when traffic volumes are lower. This reduces overall disruption and delays for traffic.
Because resurfacing work requires heavy machinery, there will be noise. Work crews will do their best to control it as much as possible, but some impact on inner-city residents can be expected.
NZTA/Waka Kotahi and the Wellington Transport Alliance appreciate that this type of work does create disruption and inconvenience for the public. However, it is essential maintenance for what is a critical transport link.
Road resurfacing requires dry weather to be effective. Schedules may change if bad weather occurs. Drivers should check road conditions before they travel.
