Lower North Island/Upper South Island - Planned state highway roadworks

Important information for drivers.
Lower North Island
- Night closures are planned for Sunday and Monday (10 &11 August) for the Mungavin on-ramp on State Highway 59. A night closure is also planned for State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill this Sunday night (10 August), and onramp night closures continue on State Highway 1 at Churton Park/Glenside.
- Monthly scheduled maintenance and night closures are planned for the Mount Victoria and Arras Tunnels. The Mount Victoria Tunnel will be closed on Tuesday night from 9 pm to 4:30 am, and the Arras Tunnel will be closed on Wednesday night from 9 pm to 4:30 am. Drivers travelling on State Highway 1 through the Wellington CBD will have to use alternative local road routes and allow extra time for their journeys.
- Daytime closures (7 am – 4:30 pm) remain ongoing next week for traffic at State Highway 53/Revans Street between Daniell Street and the State Highway 2 intersection. There will be a daytime eastbound closure in place on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. A westbound closure will be in place on Thursday and Friday. This is for KiwiRail infrastructure upgrades.
Top of the South Island
- Resilience project works continue on the Whangamoa Hill on State Highway 6 as do slip repairs at State Highway 6 Dellows Bluff
Weather alerts
- For people travelling on South Island highways and also on State Highway 1 Desert Road, be aware that a wintry blast is forecast for Friday (8 August) and Saturday (9 August), with the Metservice issuing multiple road snowfall warnings. Check road and weather conditions before you travel.
