Important information for drivers:
Matariki Holiday Weekend
- Long weekends bring extra traffic on the roads, as people make the most of a public holiday. Matariki Weekend will be no different, with Thursday afternoon, Friday morning, and Sunday afternoon the likely times for peak traffic and travel delays in and out of main urban centres.
- If you are heading away on a road trip this weekend, make the most of our Matariki Holiday Journey Planner. It shows where and when holiday congestion is expected. Use it to plan your travel and avoid peak traffic times.
- Extra care is needed on the roads. More traffic means an increased risk of crashes. Take especial care when passing, share the roads safely, make sure everyone’s seatbelt is fastened, do not drive while tired, and if you’re driving, turn your cellphone off.
Lower North Island
- Concrete repairs are planned for the Ngaumutawa roundabout on State Highway 2, south of Masterton, next Monday and Tuesday nights, road rebuild and safety barrier works are ongoing on State Highway 2 Totara Park in Upper Hutt, and maintenance night closures are planned for State Highway 58, Whitby from Sunday to Thursday.
Top of the South Island
- Repairs and night closures are planned for State Highway 6 Whakatu Drive at the end of this month, resilience works continue at the Howard Narrows on State Highway 63 and the Whangamoa Hill on State Highway 6.
- Road shoulder repairs will be underway on State Highway 6 at Longford, near Murchison, until 27 June. Stop/Go traffic management and 30 km/h temporary speed limit will be in place on weekdays from 7 am to 5.30 pm. Drivers travelling this route can expect delays of up to 10 minutes. There will be no work on weekends or the Matariki public holiday.
