Important information for drivers.
Winter driving
- Winter is almost officially upon us and colder days and nights are already here. With them come tricky driving conditions, particularly on Alpine highways in the South Island. Now is the right time for a refresher on staying safe on roads and what drivers can expect to see over the winter months.
Lower North Island
- Rebuild and safety barrier works are ongoing on State Highway 2 Totara Park in Upper Hutt, road rebuild works begin this Sunday on State Highway 2 in Masterton, and repairs will be underway on the Pukehou Overbridge on State Highway 1
- One extra day of work will be needed on Saturday (24 May) to complete the road rebuild on State Highway 2 in Carterton
Top of the South Island
- Resilience works continue at Howard Narrows on State Highway 63 and also on State Highway 6 Whangamoa, and there will be stop/go traffic management in place on State Highway 1 Weld Pass for drainage works
- Pavement repairs are planned for State Highway 60 Motueka over the next two weeks. Work will be done Tuesday to Thursday nights, between 7 pm and 6 am. Stop/Go traffic management will be in place between Fearon and Wallace Streets. Drivers travelling through Motueka should allow extra travel time while this work is being completed and expect an uneven road surface outside of work hours.
The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week.

Note: Road works are dependent on weather and other factors. Bad weather can see work postponed to the next suitable night in the works programme.
